Description

The Crow Wing County Historical Society holds both a museum and library for its county. The museum is located in a former Sheriff’s Residence and Jail within Brainerd, MN. It holds a vast amount of authentic pioneer logging and tools, photos and artifacts from the period of the Northern Pacific Railway, and history regarding the mining profession that took place in the late 1800s. The museum also offers a viewing of an old jail cell and a tour through the sheriff’s old home that was during the late 19th century. The library portion offers an extensive amount of research material available to the public. Among that is 1,500 county resident biographies, county and township histories by Anna Himrod, oral histories from the 1980s to the 1990s, Brainerd City Directories, the Crow Wing County Naturalization Index, past yearbooks, as well as information on past obituaries. All of these resources are free to use and they offer a list of online web sources for more genealogy work.
