<text>The Beltrami Historical Society was founded in 1952. Our first location was adjacent to the present-day Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in downtown Bemidji, next to the famous statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Here, the BCHS operated a museum, offered research assistance and pursued its mission of preserving Beltrami County history for more than twenty years. In 1993, the BCHS moved to a building located at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds and operated as a research center with no exhibit space or museum. In 1999, a collaborative vision to bring the BCHS and museum back to downtown Bemidji became a community-wide priority. Minnesota State legislative appropriations, investments by local units of government, area businesses and countless individuals achieved an ambitions goal of restoring the James J. Hill railroad depot. The exterior of the depot has been fully restored, and while maintaining the historical integrity of the interior, it was rehabilitated for adaptive reuse and opened as the new Beltrami County History Center, at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW Bemidji, MN on April 30, 2001.</text>

<text>The Cass County, MN Museum & Historical Society provides an extensive American Indian collection that highlights the strong connection with Leech Lake Reservation. This includes information and exhibits on cultural practices such as canoe building, maple sap harvesting, and wild ricing. Primary exhibits feature about Ojibwe Indians, fur traders, as well as “hands-on” exhibits in their pioneer Huset School. Within their researching center, they offer a wide variety of information including indexes of obituaries (1898-1904), county newspapers ranging from 1894 to the present, village histories, and photography, with a requirement fee of ten dollars. Recently, the museum has compiled a new list of past postmasters, early county divorces (1898-1906), box holders at Ah-Gwah-Ching and family histories in the Longville Centennial book. Other available publications they have access to are local history books about Boy River, Federal Dam, Remer and Sugar Point. They too have access to finding a grave site based on their compiled cemetery data within their county. </text>

It holds a vast amount of authentic pioneer logging and tools, photos and artifacts from the period of the Northern Pacific Railway, and history regarding the mining profession that took place in the late 1800s. The museum also offers a viewing of an old jail cell and a tour through the sheriff’s old home that was during the late 19th century. The library portion offers an extensive amount of research material available to the public. Among that is 1,500 county resident biographies, county and township histories by Anna Himrod, oral histories from the 1980s to the 1990s, Brainerd City Directories, the Crow Wing County Naturalization Index, past yearbooks, as well as information on past obituaries. All of these resources are free to use and they offer a list of online web sources for more genealogy work. </text>

<text>Located in the former house of U.S. Senator and Minnesota Governor Knute Nelson, the Douglas County Historical Society holds an extensive amount of history on the Douglas County. The society holds a number of different history files from the late 1800s to early 1900s for those seeking genealogy information, including marriage records, census records, cemetery records, homestead records, birth and obituary files, files on schools and businesses, 125 years of area newspapers, and a wide variety of plat maps. This feature does cost 10 dollars per day for any research that you may have, or 20 dollars per day for a research librarian to do it. They also have access to 5,000 archival photos of different past Douglas County events that they are able to scan and put on CDs for the public. Among their other exhibits, the Society has a large collection of educational resources, including oral histories, and pioneer dress and uniforms.</text>

There is also a display on the early European settlers, culminating in a walk down an early 20th century street. Some other artifacts on display include an old ox car, a stagecoach, a furnished log cabin, and a schoolhouse. As well, the Museum and Historical Society also offer genealogical study for the public. The types of the material available for research include past censuses, indexed obituary and marriage records, naturalization records from 1883 to 1943, past Grant County newspapers, plat books, and unique histories on the community itself. It is named the Hjemkomst after the Viking ship, which was built by a local teacher and sailed in Norway. The ship is now on display, along with a film about its construction and the sea journey. Emphasis of the collection is the Norse rots of the Clay Country, and a recently built, historically accurate Stave church is located behind the museum. Along with these permanent displays, the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County also have seasonal and changing exhibits as well as an extensive amount of information on genealogy work and past community families. Some of the information that they carry include Clay County newspapers ranging from 1872 to the present, census records from the late 1800s to early 1900s, death and marriage indexes, naturalization records from 1872 to 1954, plat books, tax records, local community histories, and past manuscripts. Other unique information that the Society holds include photography collections from Ollie E. Flaten and S.P. Wang, displaying early street scenes from the Clay County. </text>
