Beltrami County Historical Society

Description
An account of the resource
The Beltrami Historical Society was founded in 1952. Our first location was adjacent to the present-day Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in downtown Bemidji, next to the famous statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Here, the BCHS operated a museum, offered research assistance and pursued its mission of preserving Beltrami County history for more than twenty years. In 1993, the BCHS moved to a building located at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds and operated as a research center with no exhibit space or museum. In 1999, a collaborative vision to bring the BCHS and museum back to downtown Bemidji became a community-wide priority. Minnesota State legislative appropriations, investments by local units of government, area businesses and countless individuals achieved an ambitions goal of restoring the James J. Hill railroad depot. The exterior of the depot has been fully restored, and while maintaining the historical integrity of the interior, it was rehabilitated for adaptive reuse and opened as the new Beltrami County History Center, at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW Bemidji, MN on April 30, 2001.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cass County, MN Museum & Historical Society provides an extensive American Indian collection that highlights the strong connection with Leech Lake Reservation. This includes information and exhibits on cultural practices such as canoe building, maple sap harvesting, and wild ricing. Primary exhibits feature about Ojibwe Indians, fur traders, as well as “hands-on” exhibits in their pioneer Huset School. Within their researching center, they offer a wide variety of information including indexes of obituaries (1898-1904), county newspapers ranging from 1894 to the present, village histories, and photography, with a requirement fee of ten dollars. Recently, the museum has compiled a new list of past postmasters, early county divorces (1898-1906), box holders at Ah-Gwah-Ching and family histories in the Longville Centennial book. Other available publications they have access to are local history books about Boy River, Federal Dam, Remer and Sugar Point. They too have access to finding a grave site based on their compiled cemetery data within their county.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cuyuna Iron Range Heritage Network & Soo Line Depot Museum is now built within the old railroad depot from 1910 and holds a number of artifacts including past photos, maps, and relics, telling the history of the Cuyuna Iron Range. Exhibits include photos and short histories on the Milford Mine Disaster, 100 year old logging tools, and the ability to search through past high school yearbooks and directories from the Miners Hospital. One other exhibit of particular interest highlights the first man in space, Dr. David Simons, who went up in a hot air balloon-like capsule, from the Portsmith Mine. The Soo Line Depot Museum has an exact replica of the capsule on display. In collaboration with the Cuyuna Lakes Recreation Area, the Network has produced bike trails around the mine lakes for the public to use and access. The Network is also involved with the Crosby Heritage Days, which is on the third weekend in August
